In late 2002 an American writer paddled, alone, six hundred miles down the Niger river through Mali, from Old Segou to Timbuktu, retracing the 1796 route of Scottish explorer Mungo Park. She was the first person ever to have completed the descent solo, and she did most of it in a small inflatable two-metre kayak.
