In October 1983 a 23-year-old American sailor was knocked unconscious below decks when her yacht hit the centre of Hurricane Raymond in the open Pacific. When she woke 27 hours later her fiance was gone, the mast was broken, and she was 1,500 miles from the nearest port. She sailed the wreck home alone in 41 days.
