Porto Tónico
White Port and Tonic
White port, tonic water, ice and a slice of citrus. It is lighter than a gin and tonic, a little sweeter, and a better introduction to port than a heavy glass after dinner. Use a dry white port and plenty of ice.
VinePair's 2018 account describes it as a low-strength aperitif drunk across Portugal, in simple bars and smart restaurants alike, and gives a ratio of one part port to two of tonic. Garnishes vary: citrus, mint or nothing.
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 60 ml dry white port, chilled
- 120 ml tonic water, chilled
- Ice cubes
- 1 slice of orange or lemon
- 1 small sprig of mint (optional)
Method
- Build Fill a large wine glass or tall glass two-thirds full with ice. Pour in the white port, then the tonic, down the side of the glass to keep the bubbles.
- Garnish Stir once, gently. Add the slice of citrus and the mint, if using, and serve straight away while it is very cold.
Chill the port and the tonic beforehand so that the ice melts slowly.
