Tinto de Verano

Red Wine and Lemon Soda over Ice

This is what people in Spain actually drink on a hot afternoon while visitors order sangría. Red wine, an equal amount of fizzy lemonade, a lot of ice and a slice of lemon. It takes a minute and nobody measures.

The Spanish source read traces the drink to the Venta de Vargas in Córdoba in the 1920s, where wine was mixed with soda against the heat, and says it had spread across Spain by the 1960s. It advises a decent, low-acid red, well-chilled soda and plenty of ice.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 100 ml young red wine, chilled
  • 100 ml gaseosa, or 50 ml lemonade and 50 ml soda water, chilled
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 slice of lemon

Method

  1. Build Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in the red wine, then top up with the gaseosa or the lemonade and soda water, pouring gently to keep the bubbles.
  2. Finish Add the slice of lemon, stir once and drink straight away, while it is very cold.

Use a cheap, fruity red. Anything good is wasted.
