For most international travellers, the Indian itinerary is set: Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Udaipur, then maybe Kerala or Goa. There is good reason for this - these are extraordinary destinations and the infrastructure is the best in the country. But India is far bigger than the standard route, and the most memorable Indian trips often pivot on a single lesser-known destination that completely upends the traveller's expectations. The following twelve destinations are India's underrated greats - the places that reward a second or third visit, the places photographers and slow travellers obsess about, the places where you might be the only non-Indian guest in your hotel. Here are the twelve we would build a second India trip around in 2026.
1. Hampi, Karnataka - The Vanished Empire
The UNESCO ruins of Vijayanagara, the capital of one of the wealthiest empires in 14th-century world history, scattered across 40 square kilometres of boulder-strewn riverine landscape. Temples, palaces, royal baths, elephant stables - all in pink granite, all abandoned after the 1565 sack. Stay at Evolve Back Hampi or Heritage Resort. Best months October to February. Three nights minimum.
2. Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh - The Cold Desert
A Tibetan-Buddhist cold-desert valley between the Greater Himalayas and Zanskar ranges. Less famous than Ladakh, more remote, more dramatically beautiful in places. The 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery (called the Ajanta of the Himalayas), the cliffside Key Monastery, the village of Komic at 4,587 m (one of the world's highest motorable villages), the river junction at Chicham with the highest bridge in Asia. Best months June to September. Reached by 10-hour drive from Manali or Shimla.
3. Andaman Islands - India's Tropical Secret
An archipelago of 572 islands in the Bay of Bengal, six hours by flight from Delhi and a world away from mainland India. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) has Radhanagar Beach, voted Asia's best by Time magazine in 2004 and still arguably the most beautiful single beach in India. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) for quieter coves. World-class scuba diving at Dixon's Pinnacle, the Wall and the M.V. Mars wreck. Stay at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Havelock or Barefoot at Havelock. Limited foreign tourist permits to the Nicobar Islands further south.
4. Meghalaya - The Living Root Bridges
The "Abode of Clouds" - India's wettest state and one of its most beautiful. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram hold the world rainfall records (over 11 metres annually). The Living Root Bridges at Nongriat - grown over decades from the aerial roots of Indian rubber trees by the Khasi tribe - are unique on earth. The double-decker root bridge at Nongriat requires a 3-hour hike down and 3-hour climb back up. Stay at Sa-I-Mika Resort or Polo Towers Shillong. Best months October to April for clear days; May to September for full waterfall drama.
5. Bundi, Rajasthan - The Blue Town Without Tourists
Smaller, quieter and more atmospheric than the famous Blue City of Jodhpur, Bundi has a 14th-century palace covered in some of Rajasthan's finest Bundi-school murals, a 300-year-old step-well (Raniji-ki-Baori) and twisting indigo-painted lanes. Three hours from Jaipur, two from Pushkar, almost no tour buses. Rudyard Kipling wrote Kim partly here. Stay at the Bundi Vilas heritage haveli. Two nights.
6. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh - The Monastery Beyond the Pass
The largest Buddhist monastery in India after the Potala in Lhasa, at 3,000 m in the eastern Himalayas. The 17th-century Tawang Monastery housed the sixth Dalai Lama and is the spiritual centre of the Monpa people. Reached by 13-hour drive from Tezpur over the 4,176 m Sela Pass. Restricted permits required (Inner Line Permit and special Arunachal entry). Stay at Hotel Yashi Khang or Dondrub Khangsar. Best months March to October.
7. Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh - The Erotic Temples
The UNESCO Hindu and Jain temple complex built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 AD. Famous for the explicit Kamasutra sculptures (around 10 percent of the carvings), the temples are equally extraordinary for the sheer quality of stone-carving and the lyrical Khajuraho-style architecture. Visit early morning. Daily flights from Delhi via Varanasi. Stay at the Lalit Temple View Hotel. Two nights.
8. Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka - The Indian Tuscany
The high coffee-plantation country of the Western Ghats, three hours from Bengaluru. Cool climate (15 to 24 C year-round), rolling green hills, plantation-stay homestays, the unique Kodava warrior culture. The Tadiandamol peak hike, Dubare Elephant Camp and the Tibetan-Buddhist Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe (the largest Tibetan settlement in south India). Stay at Evolve Back Coorg or Tamara Coorg. Best months October to March.
9. Pondicherry (Puducherry), Tamil Nadu - The French Quarter
A former French colony on the Coromandel coast, with mustard-yellow colonial villas, French-named streets, the Aurobindo Ashram, the experimental township of Auroville and the best baguettes in India. Three hours from Chennai. Stay at Palais de Mahe, Maison Perumal or La Villa. Two to three nights.
10. Mawlynnong, Meghalaya - The Cleanest Village in Asia
Famously declared the cleanest village in Asia by Discover India magazine in 2003, Mawlynnong is a tiny Khasi tribal village on the Bangladesh border. Bamboo dustbins on every corner, communal cleaning every morning, the Sky View bamboo platform across the border, and the most famous Living Root Bridge at Riwai. Day trip from Shillong or overnight at the Mawlynnong Guest House.
11. Majuli, Assam - The River Island
The world's largest river island - 880 square kilometres in the Brahmaputra, accessible only by ferry from Jorhat. Home to 22 Vaishnavite Satras (Hindu monasteries) founded by the 15th-century saint Sankardev, with a unique tradition of bhaona masked dance. The island is shrinking rapidly from erosion and may disappear by 2040 - a melancholy slow-tourism destination. Stay at La Maison de Ananda or Risong Family Cottage.
12. Munnar and the Western Ghats Tea Country, Kerala
Not unknown but consistently underweighted in Kerala itineraries. The Munnar tea hills sit at 1,500 m in the Western Ghats - undulating green tea-bush carpets, the Eravikulam National Park with the endangered Nilgiri tahr, the Tata Tea Museum, and some of India's best mid-altitude trekking. Stay at The Tea Sanctuary, Windermere Estate or SpiceTree Munnar. Best months October to March.
How to Build a Hidden India Trip
The best "second-trip" Indian itineraries combine one well-known anchor with two or three of the above. Examples:
- Hampi plus Goa plus Pondicherry (14 days, fly Mumbai or Bengaluru in, Chennai out)
- Spiti plus Ladakh (14 days, June to September only, Manali in via overland, Leh out by air)
- Meghalaya plus Assam plus Tawang (14 days, the northeast circuit, Guwahati hub)
- Andamans plus Tamil Nadu temples plus Pondicherry (14 days, Port Blair fly in, Chennai out)
Pre-book Inner Line Permits, regional private drivers and homestay introductions through a specialist operator - the off-the-beaten-track Indian destinations all have logistical wrinkles that local fixers solve quickly.
