Start with the journey, not the hotel booking. Marrakech and Essaouira deserve different bases; this guide helps you choose one that works.

Six bases to compare first
- Marrakech: First-trip anchor; choose it when the surrounding region matters as much as the room.
- Fes: Strong second base; choose it when the surrounding region matters as much as the room.
- Casablanca: Regional contrast; choose it when the surrounding region matters as much as the room.
- Rabat: Nature / culture leg; choose it when the surrounding region matters as much as the room.
- Chefchaouen: First-trip anchor; choose it when the surrounding region matters as much as the room.
- Essaouira: Strong second base; choose it when the surrounding region matters as much as the room.

Base logic beats hotel-list logic
Casablanca and Marrakech are the main international gateways, with high-speed/classic rail on key northern corridors and road transport essential for Atlas, desert and Atlantic routes. Start with the station, road, ferry or airport connections you actually need, then choose the neighbourhood or property inside that base.
One base or several?
- 7 days: Choose Marrakech–Atlas/Essaouira or Fes–Rabat/Chefchaouen rather than crossing the whole country
- 10 days: Link one imperial-city corridor with Atlas or coast using rail/road deliberately
- 14 days: Add a south-east desert block only with realistic long road days or a one-way routing strategy
When to pay more
Paying more can be rational when it removes a car day, a cross-city transfer or an early-morning repositioning. Paying more for a famous postcode that sends you backwards every day is usually the worse trade.
Who should avoid constant hotel changes?
Families, travellers with substantial luggage and anyone using a rail-heavy route usually gain more from two strong bases than from a chain of one-night stays.
