This is a sample ten-day Egypt itinerary, not a replacement for a dedicated guide to the Pyramids of Giza. Cairo and Giza are only one part of a journey that may include the Nile Valley or the Red Sea. Make choices about travel time before adding another region.

The Pyramids of Giza & The Grand Egyptian Museum
The Pyramids - the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World - sit at the edge of Cairo's western suburbs. The complex includes:
- The Great Pyramid of Khufu - 146 metres tall, originally; built around 2560 BCE; you can enter the inner chambers for additional fee
- The Pyramid of Khafre - 136 metres; still retains some of the original limestone casing at the top
- The Pyramid of Menkaure - the smallest at 65 metres
- The Sphinx - the 73-metre lion-bodied human-headed monument
- The Solar Boat Museum - the 4,500-year-old wooden boat discovered alongside the Great Pyramid
The new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at the foot of the pyramids - 20 years in construction - finally opened in 2024 and represents the world's largest collection of Egyptian antiquities under one roof, including the complete Tutankhamun collection for the first time since its 1922 discovery. Allow 4-6 hours minimum.

Nile Cruises - The Critical Choice
The 4-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan is the iconic Egypt experience. The boat market is enormous and quality varies wildly:
- Oberoi Zahra - the gold-standard Nile cruise; 27-cabin luxury with restaurant-quality dining
- Oberoi Philae - boutique 22-cabin alternative
- Sanctuary Sun Boat IV - 36-cabin boutique cruiser
- Mövenpick MS Royal Lily / Lotus - well-regarded mid-luxury
- Steam Ship Sudan - the historic 1885 vessel that inspired Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile"
- Dahabiya cruises - the traditional sailing vessels; 6-8 cabins; the most authentic experience
Pre-book luxury Nile cruise packages 4-6 months ahead in peak season.
Luxor - The World's Greatest Open-Air Museum
Luxor sits on the ancient Theban Necropolis - 4,000 years of pharaonic capital. East Bank vs West Bank:
- East Bank (life): Karnak Temple (the largest religious complex ever built); Luxor Temple (with the Sphinx Avenue restored 2021)
- West Bank (death): Valley of the Kings (Tutankhamun, Ramesses II, Seti I); Valley of the Queens; Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari; Colossi of Memnon
Aswan & Abu Simbel
- Aswan - the gentler southern city; Philae Temple (relocated when Aswan High Dam was built); the Unfinished Obelisk; felucca sailing on the Nile
- Abu Simbel - 280 km south of Aswan; the four colossal statues of Ramesses II carved into the mountainside; the relocation when the High Dam was built was a 1960s engineering miracle; full-day trip (4 AM start) or quick flight from Aswan
The Red Sea Extension
For beach and diving: the Red Sea coast offers some of the world's best coral reefs. Top resorts:
- Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh
- Hilton Marsa Alam Nubian Resort
- Soma Bay (Steigenberger) - quieter than Hurghada
- El Gouna - the polished resort town
Tips & Tricks
- Always hire a qualified Egyptologist guide - the difference between seeing temples and understanding them is enormous; book through reputable operators
- Tipping ("baksheesh") is constant in Egypt - small bills (5, 10, 20 Egyptian pounds) for every service; budget USD 10-15/day in tips beyond restaurant gratuities
- Dress modestly at all times - shoulders and knees covered; women may consider a headscarf at mosques
- Friday is the holy day - some shops close; mosques are most active
- Drinking water: follow current local public-health and accommodation advice; use sealed or treated water where tap water or ice is not advised
- Egyptian sun is brutal - SPF 50+, hat with chin strap, sunglasses, frequent water
- Best time: October-April (mild temperatures); avoid June-August when desert heat hits 40°C+
- Vehicle traffic in Cairo is genuinely chaotic; Uber and Careem the easiest way to navigate
- Photography fees apply at most archaeological sites - check signage
- The "selling pressure" at major monuments is intense; firm but polite refusal works best
- Solo female travel requires extra modesty and confidence; consider organised tours for the most comfort
