This is a suggested ten-day Morocco itinerary beginning in Marrakech, not another general city guide. Combining the cities, mountains and coast calls for decisions about distance and overnight stays. Prioritise what interests you most rather than attempting every stop on the same trip.

For the city itself, see our dedicated Marrakech medina guide.

Visa & Entry Requirements 2026

Morocco's entry rules depend on your passport and can change. For example, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days and need a passport valid for at least three months after arrival; other nationalities should check the Moroccan immigration authority or consulate. Confirm current requirements before booking. Pre-book Marrakech airport transfers and key tours for a simpler arrival.

Marrakech - The Red City

  • The Souks - the labyrinth of covered markets behind Jemaa el-Fnaa; spices, textiles, leather, lanterns, jewellery

Where to Stay - Riads vs Hotels

The defining Marrakech accommodation choice:

  • Riads - traditional Moroccan houses with central courtyards; converted to boutique hotels; intimate, atmospheric, often hard to find on narrow medina streets. The authentic Marrakech experience
  • Luxury hotels - the modern 5-stars; Royal Mansour, La Mamounia, Four Seasons; better facilities, less character

Top Marrakech Stays

Tips & Tricks

  • Always negotiate prices in souks and with taxi drivers; standard practice; rule of thumb start at 30% of asking price
  • "Fake guides" in the medina are everywhere; always politely decline; if you want a guide, hire one through your hotel
  • Always carry small dirhams for tips, taxis, bathrooms (5-10 dirham for bathroom attendants)
  • Restaurants do not serve alcohol in many medina locations; check before booking
  • Dress modestly outside hotel pools; shoulders and knees covered in public
  • Ramadan considerations - many restaurants closed during daytime; check your travel dates
  • Drinking water: follow current local public-health and accommodation advice; use sealed or treated water where tap water is not advised
  • Tipping 10-15% restaurants, 10-20 dirham per service for hotel porters, 100-200 dirham per day for guides
  • Get a SIM card at the airport - data is cheap and GPS is essential in the medina
  • Photograph people only with permission - the snake charmers and water sellers in Jemaa el-Fnaa expect payment for photos (10-20 dirham reasonable)
