A good Japan itinerary is measured by usable days, not the number of pins saved. Count hotel changes, transfer buffers and the first hour after arrival.

Route frameworks

  • 7 days: Tokyo + Kyoto, with one carefully chosen day trip; keep hotel changes low
  • 10 days: Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka/Hiroshima or Fuji/Hakone
  • 14 days: Golden Route plus one strong regional extension such as Kyushu or Hokkaido by flight
  • 21 days: two or three regional systems with slower stays; use luggage forwarding to reduce transfer friction

The two-night rule

Unless a stop is genuinely a transit point, two or more nights usually produces a better ratio of experience to packing. Fast transport does not make check-in and check-out disappear.

Protect the final night

When ferries, mountain roads, weather-sensitive flights or long rail legs are involved, place the final night near the international departure gateway rather than gambling the trip on a perfect connection.
