The Swiss Alps remain the gold standard for luxury winter sport - reliable snow, the best-groomed pistes in Europe, a hotel scene unrivalled for old-world glamour, and four resorts that anchor every elite ski circuit: Zermatt, St Moritz, Verbier and Gstaad. Add Davos-Klosters if your trip overlaps with the World Economic Forum in January.

Zermatt

The most photogenic ski resort on earth - car-free, anchored by the Matterhorn, with skiing year-round at altitude. Mont Cervin Palace and Riffelalp Resort (2,222 m, Europe's highest five-star) split the luxury vote. Eat at Chez Vrony on the slope at lunch and After Seven at the Backstage Hotel for dinner. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise gondola climbs to 3,883 m. Book Zermatt ski passes and gondola tickets ahead.

St Moritz

Glamour central. The Engadine valley, frozen lakes, and the most concentrated luxury hotel scene in the Alps. Badrutt's Palace is the icon (King's Hall, Le Restaurant, Chesa Veglia). Kulm Hotel is the historic alternative; Suvretta House for the family-feel grand dame. Ski Corviglia or Corvatsch in the day; Cresta Run, polo on the ice, or White Turf horse racing on the weekends.

Verbier

The French-speaking party-luxury alternative - bigger off-piste terrain than anywhere in Switzerland and a serious nightlife scene. Chalet d'Adrien and W Verbier dominate the hotel scene; private chalets are the more authentic Verbier mode. Le Carve and Pub Mont Fort for the apres scene; Le Mille for the Michelin-star dinner.

Gstaad

The quietest, most aristocratic of the four. The Alpina Gstaad, Gstaad Palace and Le Grand Bellevue are the heritage hotels. The skiing is gentler than Zermatt or Verbier - this is the resort for those who came primarily for the village, the spa and dinner.

The Three Must-Eat Mountain Restaurants

  • Chez Vrony (Zermatt) - book months ahead, ski-in/ski-out
  • La Marmite (Verbier, Les Ruinettes) - the apres-lunch institution
  • Paradiso (St Moritz, Corviglia) - cliff-edge views over the Engadine

Off-Snow Activities

  • Cresta Run (St Moritz) - amateurs can ride with a member; mornings only
  • Glacier Express - Zermatt to St Moritz on the world's slowest panoramic train
  • Polo on Snow & White Turf - St Moritz, late January
  • Heli-skiing from Verbier or Zermatt - legal in Switzerland with strict guides
  • Book Alpine excursions, Glacier Express tickets and private guides

Tips Most Guides Miss

  • February school holiday weeks double rates and triple lift queues - aim for the second half of January or mid-March
  • Swiss Travel Pass covers most non-resort mountain trains and is the right buy for multi-resort trips
  • Book ski lessons by Christmas - top instructors at the elite resorts book out for season
  • Drive on the right; chains/winter tyres legally required December-March
  • The Zermatt to Riffelalp valley terminus train is the most scenic ride in Switzerland
