Europe in 2026 rewards travellers who plan around the seasons. Hit the Amalfi Coast in May or late September, the Greek islands in June and early October, the Swiss Alps in January and February, and Iceland under the Northern Lights from October to March. Overtourism is no longer a rumour - the difference between a magical trip and a frustrating one is increasingly about timing.

Visa & Entry 2026 - ETIAS Is Not Yet Operating

Checked October 2026: ETIAS is not yet operating and the EU is not accepting applications. Visa-exempt visitors do not currently need to apply for ETIAS before entering the Schengen Area. The EU lists a EUR 20 fee for when the system launches, but has not announced the final start date. Use the official EU ETIAS FAQ for launch updates; do not pay an intermediary claiming to issue ETIAS today. The Schengen 90-days-in-180 rule still applies to eligible short stays. The UK has its own ETA rules for eligible visitors, while the Republic of Ireland has separate entry requirements and does not use a UK ETA.

The Luxury Hotels That Define Europe

A handful of properties anchor every elite European itinerary: Le Sirenuse in Positano, Cheval Blanc Paris, Aman Venice, Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on Cap d'Antibes, The Gritti Palace Venice, The Belmond Hotel Cipriani, Reid's Palace Madeira, Borgo Egnazia Puglia, and Hotel de Russie Rome. Booking 6-9 months ahead is now standard for summer.

Transport - Use the Train

Europe's high-speed rail network is the smartest way to travel. The Eurostar connects London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam; TGV covers France; Frecciarossa and Italo ply Italy; AVE covers Spain; and ICE Germany. First class beats business-class flights for city-pair journeys under 5 hours.

Hidden Gems That Aren't Yet Ruined

  • Puglia, Italy - the next Tuscany without the crowds
  • Alentejo, Portugal - vineyards and white-washed villages
  • Albanian Riviera - what Croatia was 20 years ago
  • Madeira, Portugal - levada walks and serious wine
  • Aeolian Islands, Sicily - volcanic and serene

Tips Most Guides Miss

  • Avoid August in Italy and France - locals leave and tourists triple; service often suffers
  • Book restaurants in Italy 2-3 weeks ahead for anything Michelin or famous
  • Take the train, not the plane for sub-5-hour city pairs - airport hassle erases the time saving
  • Cash is still king in southern Italy, rural Spain and Greek tavernas - carry small euro notes
  • European credit-card pin codes differ; bring a 4-digit pin chip-and-pin card

Cost Reality Check

Mid-range luxury Europe (4-star hotels, train travel, occasional Michelin) runs USD 400-600/person/day. Full ultra-luxury circuit hitting Amalfi, the French Riviera and Lake Como in season can exceed USD 1,500/day. Eastern Europe (Prague, Budapest, Croatia outside summer) is still 50-60% cheaper than the West.
