Santorini is the most photographed island in the world and worth every Instagram cliche when you do it right. The trick is staying caldera-side (Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani), visiting in May or October not August, and treating the Oia sunset like a sport - you arrive 90 minutes early or you go elsewhere.

Where to Stay - Caldera Side Only

Three villages have the caldera-edge view that justifies coming. Oia is the most beautiful but also the busiest, particularly at sunset. Imerovigli sits at the caldera's highest point with the most dramatic views and far fewer crowds. Firostefani is the quietest, a short walk from Fira's restaurants.

The Best Hotels

  • Canaves Oia Epitome - villa-only luxury with private pools above the caldera
  • Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel - the legendary cliff-cut cave suites in Oia
  • Grace Hotel Santorini (Imerovigli) - the cleanest minimalist design on the island
  • Cavo Tagoo Santorini - cave suites with private plunge pools
  • Andronis Concept Wellness Resort - the newest spa-focused luxury address

Pre-book Santorini transfers and caldera sunset cruises at least 30 days ahead.

The Sunset Strategy

The Oia sunset is genuinely magical and genuinely overcrowded. Three solutions: 1) book dinner at Lauda or Ambrosia in Oia with caldera tables; 2) take a private catamaran sunset cruise from Vlychada port (3-5 hours, lunch/dinner on board); 3) skip Oia entirely and watch from your Imerovigli hotel terrace - the same sun, no crowd.

Fine Dining

  • Selene in Pyrgos - the original Santorini fine-dining institution
  • Botargo at Canaves Oia Epitome - one Michelin star
  • Lauda in Oia - cliff-edge tasting menu
  • Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia - the local favourite tavern with the best ambience on the island

Beaches

Santorini's beaches are volcanic black sand, not Greek island white. Perissa and Perivolos on the south coast have the best beach clubs (Seaside by Notos, JoJo). Vlychada is the more refined alternative with dramatic moonscape cliffs. Red Beach is closed to swimming due to rockfall but worth the photo stop.

Wineries & Day Trips

Santorini's volcanic soil produces world-class Assyrtiko white wine. Santo Wines has the best view; Domaine Sigalas the best wine; Argyros Estate the deepest history. A wine tour with private driver is the perfect afternoon. For an off-island day trip, take a fast ferry to Folegandros or Milos - both gorgeous, far less crowded. Book Santorini wine tours and island-hopping day trips.

Tips Most Guides Miss

  • Avoid August - prices double, crowds triple, and your sunset photo will be mostly heads
  • The walk from Fira to Oia along the caldera (10 km) is one of Europe's great walks - do it at sunrise
  • Cruise ships disembark midday in Fira; have lunch elsewhere
  • Cave suites are dark and cool - request a balcony room if you want sun on the bed
  • The donkey ride from Fira port is increasingly discouraged on animal welfare grounds - take the cable car
