Transport is not a footnote in Japan; it determines which itinerary is sensible. Choose the route and mode together.

What each mode is good for

  • Shinkansen is exceptional on the main corridors, but a national rail pass is not automatically the cheapest answer; price the actual route.
  • JNTO notes that oversized baggage above 160 cm total dimensions requires advance space reservation on several major shinkansen lines.
  • Luggage forwarding can transform a multi-city route by removing large bags from crowded station transfers.
  • Domestic flights can beat rail for Hokkaido, Okinawa and some long north–south jumps; cars become valuable in rural Hokkaido, Kyushu and island areas.

When a car helps

A car is valuable when it removes repeated rural transfers. It is poor value when it spends the trip parked in a dense historic centre. Price parking, tolls, fuel and one-way fees before deciding.

Transfer friction matters

Compare station size, port transfers, airport access and luggage handling, not just the headline journey time.
